Generation Kill
I am constantly amazed at the quality programming that HBO greenlights. Their latest mini-series, “Generation Kill” will no doubt get many statues this upcoming award season. While I’m no big fan of war stories, I am drawn to the personal stories of the Marines on this show. The teleplay, written by Ed Burns (genius!) was adapted from Even Wrights book of the same name. He was the reporter from Rolling Stone that rolled with the 1st Recon Battalion and wrote about these brave souls as they entered the 2nd Iraq War.
Like many of the rest of you, I do not believe in this war, but I do believe in the men who we have sent to fight and die for the greedy elite. There’s something about this show that makes me feel even more deeply for the soldiers we have fighting this war. Maybe it’s because it’s based on true stories, first hand accounts, of how fucked up the leadership is, but how the men stayed strong as well as they could under the circumstances. How would any of us handle it if we were in their situation?
As I watched the 3rd episode tonight, something in me wanted to cry. I’m really not sure why, but I did. Alexander Skarsgard & Stark Sands are amazing on this show. They really are. But will the real Sgt. Brad “Iceman” Colbert and Lt. Nate Fick please stand up. We should all be saluting you and your men.
