This is the Life

I am, for the first time in my adult life on a real, true and proper vacation. I usually go to Seattle or LA or someplace in the US to visit friends and family when I have time off. Always interwoven with some sort of networking or “things” to handle. But this time around, I knew I needed something grander. So I booked a ticket to South Africa to meet up with some friends who would be here for the holidays.
While this vacation is not quite the safari filled extravaganza most would take when visiting the motherland, it in an amazing experience. I’ve been hanging with the locals, visiting their haunts, learning about their daily lives, their personal histories and how it is shaped by the history of their country.
I’ve been in Joburg & Cape Town city, in the Indian Ocean, slept on a giant boulder at sunset, waded in the Atlantic Ocean, changed a flat tire on the side of the road with 3 other amazing (gangsta!) women and am now holed up in the beautiful mountain side of Cape Town.
This trip has also given me an opportunity to connect with some old friends on the next level. When we have friends for many years, we tend to keep the image of each other of when we were young. But we’re adults now and we have changed over the years. We have become new people and while we all feel close and love each others friendships, we needed the opportunity to get to know each other in our adult lives. It’s been an eye opening experience and one I won’t allow to be hidden in the back of my mind when I return to New York.
I’ve also met some new amazing people who have shown me great hospitality and friendship. I thank them for welcoming me into their world so openly.
This trip is not yet over…more to come soon.
