Vote Bill Thompson for NYC Mayor
Ok folks. My day is much busier than I expected it to be so I have to make this quick, but it doesn’t make it any less important.
While your vote is a personal one and voting is more important than who you vote for, it’s important to look at your candidates. These are the reasons I’m voting for Bill Thompson. If you haven’t already, please do your own research to make up your mind though.
* We have a 2 term limit in place for a reason. What makes Bloomberg more special than any other Mayor or elected public official with term limits set on them? I think it sets a dangerous precedent to extend his term limits.
* Construction projects. Gawker actually has a pretty good write up here regarding all the construction happening in NYC and how it really hasn’t benefitted the middle class at. all. I know, it’s Gawker but hey…at least it isn’t a boring read. More Gawker hipster reasoning here.
* Speaking of construction, one my big anti-Bloomie points is the Atlantic Yards project which would essentially ruin all the wonderful things about Brooklyn.
* MTA & Taxi rates have just continued to go up and up. It’s ridiculous. Bloomie hasn’t done enough to help the citizens of NYC to keep the cost of living down IMO.
* Also, taking the frickin’ subway does not make you one of the people when you break the record on campaign spending. C’mon now. If that’s not trying to buy votes I don’t know what is. It’s not fair but it is politics as usual for those that can afford it.
* To my gays out there…I don’t need to remind you that you still can’t get married in this town.
* I’m a grown up. Please stop telling me I can’t eat fatty food or smoke cigarettes. I don’t force feed burgers into the mouths of children nor do I blow second-hand smoke in their faces. I know it’s bad for me. But it’s my decision, no? I get the high taxes & ban on smoking indoors but let’s leave it there. OK?
* WTC – it’s been 8 years. And Bloomie did a great job of getting the city back on track after 9/11. He got the power turned back on after the blackout of 2003. But there is still a giant hole where those Twin Towers used to be. Can we fill it please and move on? I still can’t walk past there in the state it’s in.
* Will Bill Thompson be a better Mayor? We won’t know until he gets in office but I’m willing to take that chance. And I know it sounds like I’m voting against Bloomberg rather than for Thompson but I feel he’s better connected to the people of New York. He’s got a respectable list of endorsements form people I trust. He’s got both NY Senators, Pres. Obama, Attorney Gen. Cuomo and my own Rep. Yvette Clark along with many many more. It’s hard to compare an existing record to a proposed one. I say, let’s see what the man’s got.
That’s the quick list. I’m sorry I couldn’t get more in-depth about all this. Again, these are my personal reasons and yours may vary but please please…get out there and Vote tomorrow.
