Movie of the Year (2009) – 500 Days of Summer
Hands down, my favorite movie of 2009 is “500 Days of Summer.” (Full length trailer at bottom of post.)
I realize this movie is up against serious competition but it’s a personal choice based on how many times I think I would be able to watch the movie in the years to come. For me, it’s right up there with High Fidelity, Princess Bride & Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I can watch these movies over and over and never get tired of them.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Zooey Deschanel are amazing in this movie. Their on-screen chemistry is one I hope that they continue to repeat in future films. It’s touching, heartbreaking, romantic and funny. While there are plenty of romantic comedies, few have the kind of story telling that will allow it to become timeless. Most of all, we find pieces of ourselves in them.
In addition to being a great movie, the soundtrack is filled with aural goodness with song from The Smiths, She & Him, Black Lips, Feist, Regina Spector and a host of others. Be sure to pick up both the DVD & CD of this wonderful tale of Boy meets Girl.
Bonus: Here’s a little video that Zooey & Joey made, inspired by the musical-style dance sequence in the movie. ADORABLE!!
Bonus #2: In reference to the scene where Summer compares her relationship with Tom to Sid & Nancy’s, Cinemash made this video. She is Sid, He is Nancy. Funny.
