Aceyalone – The Guidelines

Aceyalone - The Guidelines

Aceyalone is hands down my favorite Project Blowed MC. The test of a great MC is being able to listen to them years later and still find their lyrics intriguing and meaningful. As a member of Freestyle Fellowship, he and his cohorts have many many songs that I still listen to today and love as much as the first time I heard them. Acey’s lyrics differ from other MC’s because they are clever, deep and full of metaphors that are worded in such a way that require a little extra thought.

Picking today’s OSJOTD from Aceyalone’s large catalogue of music is difficult. Does one choose from old Freestyle Fellowship or something from his solo projects? What Acey song has mean the most to me on a personal level? What exemplifies his musical stylistics? It’s really tough to choose but it came down to “The Guidelines” from his 2nd solo LP, “A Book of Human Language,” which happens to be one of my favorite records and succeeds in his attempt to “redefine your hip-hop guidelines.”

Volume 10 – Pistol Grip Pump

Volume 10 - Pistol Grip Pump

I missed that midnight deadline to put this up but you know how the daily hustle goes. But Project Blowed fans, I will not leave you hanging.

Today’s OSJOTD Project Blowed Edition is “Pistol Grip Pump” by the one and only Volume 10 from his 1993 LP Hip-Hopera. I say one and only because some Googling revealed that this song is mislabeled on many sites as Mack 10. Y’all got the wrong 10 and the wrong crew. There was also some controversy w/ Ice Cube over this beat but we’re going to leave that alone for now.

Chillin Villain Empire – Calistylics

Sorry for the short and sweet post but it’s a crazy day! But I didn’t want to leave you hanging so here is today’s installment of OSJOTD, Project Blowed edition featuring CVE.

CVE or Chillin Villain Empire was one of the groups who used to perform at the Good Life cafe and is a member of the Project Blowed collective. While their rhyme style fits well into the chopped and styled trademark of PB, what amazed me about them was their rap harmony. Yes, rap harmony. I don’t really know else to describe it though I’m sure there are others who could.

Freestyle Fellowship – “Hot Potato”

Freestyle Fellowship -

A few weeks ago, I stumbled back into my apartment from a rainy day of running errands and turned on the TV. Meant to be background noise as I tried to clean my apartment, something came on that was from my familiar past. Turns out, it was the documentary on a bygone era of West Coast Underground Hip-Hop called “This is the Life” and the voice belonged to Myka 9 of the Freestyle Fellowship.

FF was one of the most prolific groups to come out of Los Angeles in the early 90′s and out of the Good Life. There’s way too much history in all of the above references so please click the links to read more.
